The University of Chicago

is an American private University located in the Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago. It is one of the most prestigious and influential world universities.

It is composed of university college (named The College), the School of Medicine Pritsker, the Booth School of Business, the Divinity School, the Law School, the GrahamSchool of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies, the Harris School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration.

The economic School of thought known as Chicago, which has the leader Milton Friedman or even Robert Lucas, has emerged from the Department of Economics at the University. Their neoclassical theory was one of the most important of the secondpart of the twentieth century.

Sociological thinking of the Chicago school was created by Albion Small in the Department of sociology at the University.

The University of Chicago counts among its alumni and professors 89 Nobel Laureate, 9 medals Fields5, 18 medals John Bates Clark and 24 Pulitzer Prize

The University was founded in 1890 by the American Baptist Education Society andoil magnate John D. Rockefeller8, and the first classes took place on October 1, 1892. William Rainey Harper became the first president of the University, he wanted tocombine anglo-saxon education, the excellence of German universities research techniques. One of the peculiarities of the methods of Harper was to allow students toexit graduate at any time of the year. Since its creation, women were allowed to attend courses at the University, which was not necessarily the case for other Americanuniversities. The first buildings were inspired by the English Gothic style.

In 1910, the University adopted its logo (which is still the same today) and the Latinmotto "Crescat Scientia, Vita Excolatur", meaning "As knowledge grows so life enriches".

In 1929, Robert Hutchins was named president of the University. It notably improved the academic courses undergraduate, for example in preferring the course in the form of debate instead of large lectures.

While in the 1950s, the Hyde Park neighborhood began to to degrade, the University reacts and financed the construction of new road and the architectural renewal ofneighbouring buildings. Then the University has expanded with the addition of more modern buildings in the style. She bought including in 1963 architect Frank LloydWright Robie House.

In 1978, the Professor of history, Hanna Gray became President of the University, making her the first female President of a major research University. Under his presidency the staff were increased both in undergraduate and postgraduate.

In 1998, the new undergraduate program emerged, highlighting especially the learning of foreign languages and openness to different cultures.

In 2008, the former pupil and billionaire David Booth made a donation of $ 300 million to the University who in gratitude named the Business School in his name.
