University : France is poorly ranked by the Times Higher Education
The edition
2005/2016 the world ranking of the Times Higher Education universities, published Thursday, October 1, confirms the trend of previous years: always in mind, American universities however lose the land, while the European win seats.
According to this classification, which is part of the right four each year, the United States has 63 universities in top 200 global, or eleven fewer than last year. The United Kingdom place meanwhile 34 establishments in this top 200 (+ 5), the Germany gets 20 (+ 8) and the Netherlands 12 (+ 1). And for the first time in a decade, a non anglo-saxon institution is among the top ten: the Polytechnic of Zurich (ETHZ), in Switzerland.
On the other hand, the France is still less well endowed than in 2014-2015, losing one of its two schools of the top 100, and three in the top 200, where it remains onlyfive institutions. If the École normale supérieure in Paris, rose to 54th position (compared to 78 last year), the École Polytechnique, which was classified in the 61st place last year down ranked 101st. Only 27 colleges and universities lights appear in THE list, which has this year a record number of 800 establishments.
However, the slight shift in the criteria this year, with "a better supported research publications in languages other than English, and to a better geographical distribution of responses on the academic reputation of institutions", could allow French universities to better figure in this classification, which is traditionally less favourable than others, due to the weight given to the views of peers.
